Shanghai: China’s cosmopolitan star

Book your visit to Shanghai

Shanghai, a city of futuristic skylines and the centre of China’s economy, is a melting pot of cultures from past and present. Prepare to be swept up into a world of contrasts as you step onto its streets, where soaring skyscrapers reflect in the waterways, and entire neighbourhoods have been preserved as historic landmarks.

From Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury shopping, to historic markets and an ultra-modern metro system, Shanghai isn’t just a city to see, it’s a city to experience. Shanghai’s fascinating blend of diverse sights and never-ending options makes it an exciting travel destination for just about any traveller.

Things to do in Shanghai

Shanghai is a megacity filled with impressive structures – from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the 128-storey Shanghai Tower, to the renowned Shanghai World Financial Centre.

A walk along The Bund feels like stepping into an open-air gallery. Architectural styles of all kinds are visible in the surrounding structures – Roman, Classical and Renaissance buildings line the embankment of the Huangpu River. It’s the city’s most iconic riverside, with a spectacular view of the whole cityscape (from both sides).

For a glimpse of Shanghai’s old-world charm, head down Wukang Road with its mix of architectural gems that narrate the city’s diverse past. Or, explore the former French Concession area of Tianzifang. Its maze-like alleys are abundant with Shikumen houses, galleries, and artisanal shops and trendy cafés.

Activities in Shanghai

For a leisurely day that still ticks things off your bucket list, stroll through the Yu Garden. There are ornate pavilions, delicate bridges, the Spring Hall, and the enchanting Lotus Pool to admire. The garden will transport you back to the Ming Dynasty, and there’s a vibrant bazaar connected to the park too.

Art and history enthusiasts can head to Shanghai Museum, located in People’s Square. The museum houses over 120,000 ancient artefacts, from jade carvings to bronzeware – telling the story of China’s complex heritage.

For something a little different, venture to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao, a short journey from the city. A boat cruise through its quiet canals reveals quaint, stone bridges and historic houses representing old Shanghai.

Food in Shanghai

The stylish district of Xintiandi is known for its eateries, from traditional delicacies to modern fusion.

The street food is certainly a winner in Shanghai. One popular dish is simple yet comforting – made up of crispy, fried dumplings, and noodles tossed with fragrant spring onions and soy sauce. For authentic street food, head to Wujiang Road where the tantalising aroma of xiao long bao fills the air. These soup dumplings are filled with a rich, savoury broth and tender meat.

With its quirky trunk stalls filled with a variety of trinkets and a plethora of street eats, the famous Wisdom Bay Night Market offers a lively evening of indulging. Another must-visit is Changli Road Street Food Market, where sizzling woks and bustling crowds promise an unforgettable feast.

Shopping in Shanghai

Nanjing Road is the beating heart of Shanghai’s retail world. The atmosphere of this vast neon-lit stretch is truly electric. Here, you can scout everything from luxury brands and high-street department stores, to unique souvenirs.

For quirky finds, Tianzifang’s historic alleyways are filled to the brim with craft shops, antique stores and art galleries. Hunt for handmade crafts, or one-of-a-kind pieces that speak to Shanghai’s artistic soul.

If sewing or custom-made garments are your vibe, the South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market is your hidden gem. Rows of luxurious silks and dazzling cottons invite you to craft your dream wardrobe with the help of skilled tailors.
