Basra: Iraq’s jewel on the Shatt al-Arab

Book your visit to Basra

Iraq’s third-largest city sits close to the border with Iran and Kuwait, making this ancient trading post a cosmopolitan and lively city. Once known as the ‘Venice of the East’ because of the number of canals and waterways, it sits at the heart of one of the most fertile and lush locations in Iraq.

From forests of date palms to busy markets, traditional dhow river tours and kayaking adventures, there’s plenty to see and do in this jewel of a city. Discover its ancient history in Old Basra, or try authentic Iraqi food in its many restaurants.

Haggle for bargains in the souqs, or take a day trip to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Iraqi Marshes, home to one of the oldest communities of Marsh Arabs. Basra is a revelation just waiting to be discovered by adventurous travellers.

Things to do in Basra

The heart of the city is the mighty Shatt al-Arab river where the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers meet. Get a different perspective on Basra with a tour down the river, taking you past the city on a traditional dhow boat.

The history of Basra stretches back eons and you can see some of the most important artefacts and learn more with a visit to the Basra Museum.

For a kayaking trip with a difference, hire a kayak and paddle down the Ashar Creek that cuts right through the middle of the city. It’s a unique way to see the old and new architecture that lines this waterway.

The Corniche al-Basra has been fully renovated and is now a charming place to take an evening walk along the nature promenade, where you’re surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens and art installations.

Activities in Basra

The Ahwaris or Marsh Arabs have lived in the Iraqi Marshes for centuries. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a day’s excursion takes you to meet these unique people. Travelling in a traditional mashoof (canoe), you’ll see their floating homes as well as the wildlife that inhabits the marshes.

Basra’s palm tree forests are famous, and a cool, shady place to have a leisurely picnic. You can also take a tour of the plantations to learn about their significance in the history of Basra and its importance as a trading centre.

If you’re familiar with the legend of Sinbad, a visit to the oasis of Sinbad Island is a chance to discover more about the rich maritime history of Basra. Take a stroll along the paths and green spaces, or take the kids to one of the island’s amusement arcades for some family fun.

Food in Basra

Basrawi cuisine draws its influences from Persia, the Middle East, and India. A favourite dish is masgouf, which is grilled fish (often carp) that’s slow-cooked on an open fire. Masgouf is the Iraqi national dish and is cooked using olive oil, rock salt, tamarind, and ground turmeric.

Another popular dish is qoozi, which is lamb stuffed with rice, nuts, and raisins and slow roasted. For on-the-go food, falafels and dolma (vine leaves stuffed with rice and meat or vegetables) are sold on every street corner. Or try kubba halab, a snack made from ground beef or lamb mixed with rice and spices and then fried or baked and served with yoghurt and cucumber salad.

For a sweet treat try geymar, water buffalo cream served with dates, sesame seeds and drizzled with honey.

Shopping in Basra

Basra has plenty of souqs and markets to explore, including the Indian Market, which is one of the city’s largest. Stalls selling everything from spices and leather goods to piles of dates, clothes and jewellery all vie for your attention. Be prepared to haggle for the best prices. Other markets to explore include the Hanna-Sheikh bazaar.

For some air-conditioned comfort and a choice of hundreds of stores, a trip to Basra’s newest mall is a must. This huge new structure brings together both local sellers and international brands, as well as offering entertainment and a large food court.

Take a walk down Al-Gazar Street and you’ll come to more mall shopping options as well as busy stores and shops with plenty of retail experiences for the dedicated shopper.
