Algiers: Where exotic cultures merge

Book your visit to Algiers

At the heart of Algiers is a fusion of French and north African cultures, unlike any other. This unique destination is bathed in African sunshine, yet has wide boulevards reminiscent of the streets of Paris.

A labyrinth of cobbled streets winds through the city, where The Kasbah of Algiers boasts a fascinating blend of sights, aromas and flavours. Elegant French-inspired architecture contrasts beautifully with ancient mosques, while coffee shops around every corner offer refreshing drinks.

The sweeping Bay of Algiers adds a shimmering splash of cobalt blue, with breath-taking beaches and warm, clear water that’s perfect for swimming. All this and so much more can be explored in Algiers.

Things to do in Algiers

The Kasbah of Algiers is a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting exquisite buildings. As you make your way through its 17th-century streets, look out for the Dar Aziza palace, named after a princess. Once you’ve wandered around, stop by The Great Mosque of Algiers, dating back to the 11th century. Take a break in this tranquil setting situated close to the harbour.

Then discover the rest of Algiers, filled with French architectural influences. The Notre Dame d’Afrique basilica is an ornate version of its Parisian cousin, featuring colourful glass-stained windows. Don’t forget to stroll around the Bardo Museum for a deep dive into the city’s culture. This exquisite Turkish mansion houses historic artefacts and is decorated with ornate tiles.

Activities in Algiers

Algiers is famous for its gardens and one of the best is Le Jardin d’Essai du Hamma, located in the Mohamed Belouizdad district. This stunning botanical garden was established in the early 19th century, and is recognised as one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.

If you’re in the city with kids, spend a day at the local waterpark, a fun and family-friendly place with something for all ages: the children can have a blast playing in the pool while you get pampered at the spa. Or relax on the beach where the sand is soft, and the water is shallow and clean – just right for paddling and water sports.

Golfers will have the time of their lives on a trip to Algiers. There’s a sprawling 18-hole championship course covering over 10km, with some spectacular coastal backdrops to admire as they tee off.

Food in Algiers

With a combination of African and French influences, dining in Algiers is an extraordinary experience full of surprises. From rich Tajin Zitoun served with couscous to chakchouka infused with herbs and spices, the local cuisine will delight your taste buds.

If you need something on the go, look out for Bourek. This delicacy is like a spring roll stuffed with various fillings including cheese, meat and vegetables. You can also uncover the best street food around the Kasbah of Algiers.

Prefer to indulge in fine French cuisine at high-end restaurants? Head to the Bois des Arcades neighbourhood or modern areas of the city centre. Although French dishes are plentiful in Algiers, you’ll find more familiar meals at international food halls in malls.

Shopping in Algiers

The Kasbah of Algiers is, of course, a must-visit when shopping in Algiers. Walk through a maze of streets lined with stalls selling everything from leatherwork, clothing and jewellery to herbs and spices.

For a more contemporary experience, browse through huge malls such as the Centre Commercial Bab Ezzouar and the Centre Commercial Al Qods. Each of these multi-level buildings has hundreds of stores along with food courts and entertainment facilities. They’re also air-conditioned and have plenty of parking for your convenience.

If you’re looking for something a little different, take a stroll down Didouche Mourad Street, which is packed with boutiques and artisan stores. For an authentic market experience, try the buzzing Marché Medina Jedida, stocking textiles, wood carvings and bags of spices.
